Our work-from-home mom is going to have her hands full when baby arrives.
We'll be adding a day nursery at her grandparents' home so they can help with childcare.
All this and more today on "Baby Makes 3."

-That moment when you go from couple to family, everything changes.
When you bring the baby home, you want to create a warm, comfortable, and safe environment for them.
Step one -- the nursery.
-I'm Alex.
-And I'm Aaron.
-And we are expecting a baby girl.
-In three months.
-Her name is Charlotte.
We chose a celestial theme.
So, space is something special to us.
We spent a lot of time in Iowa at an observatory.
A lot of date nights out there, a lot of cold nights.

-We're excited to try to be a working couple while having a baby.
Once Charlotte is born, we're definitely gonna get a lot help from our families.
Both families are doing nurseries of their own.
As soon as we told them, they were both like, "We're dedicating a room in our home to Charlotte."
And they're definitely gonna help out tons and tons as we go on this journey because we don't know what to expect.
-We don't.
-We don't know what to expect.
-That's the fun part about this, though.
-Yeah.
-The unexpected.
-Uh-huh.
-Last time on "Baby Makes 3," we started work on our space-themed nursery with a twist for a little girl.
Using zero-VOC paint, the walls became a soft cream color, and our ceiling became a beautiful sky blue.
Contractor Jonathan helped our couple build and install a cloud-inspired ceiling trim around the entire room.
We've backlit that trim with LED strips and included a dimmer switch for soothing nighttime effect.
Finally, our father-to-be showed off his geometry skills to help design a shooting-star growth chart that features the art of a local muralist.
We're going to start the day with a visit to the home of our grandparents-to-be.

I spend a lot of time in here, evenings and weekends.
And it's not much of a nursery, I'm afraid.
-Well, not yet.
But I know Lauren's already been here, and she's looked over the space.

-She's come up with a lot of really great ideas to turn it into sort of a multipurpose space.
So still your office, but then also a nursery.
-Great.
-Looking very much forward to sharing it.
-Yeah, it will be a cute roommate that you're gonna have in this room.
Right?
-Can hardly wait.

-Neat, great.
-Okay?
Our designer, Lauren, visited last week and took measurements of our grandparents' home office.
We decide to use the closet space for a changing table and storage for supplies and toys.
Closets can be repurposed in unique ways.
To start, we opened up the space by removing the close doors.
To match our couple's nursery, we'll be using gold cloud decals on the wall and subtle elements to create a celestial-themed day nursery at our grandparents' home.
We'll also be adding a smaller day crib and a rocking chair.
Our furnishings will complement the decor of existing furniture.
Tying the grandparents' space into your baby's nursery them helps your child always feel at home.
-I am absolutely looking forward to sharing my office.
It's gonna be so cool.
-In no time at all, our "Baby Makes 3" team has been able to update this home office into a day nursery.
We kept the existing paint and added our cloud decals in the closet around the changing table.
We moved one of the desks to another space and then placed our crib on the wall with decorative stars above.
This day nursery will help our new baby girl fit right into the flow of their lives.
-I feel like I have a huge support system.
I feel a lot more secure knowing that there's a day nursery here.

So, I'll definitely feel comfortable going to work -- going back to work when Charlotte comes.
-Back at Alex and Aaron's house, Jonathan is getting our couple started on a new project.
-Good morning.
How are you?
-Good.
So, I heard that we're gonna be putting some stars on our sky.
-We are.
-Time to get a starry night ceiling.
-Absolutely we will do that.
-Okay.
How are we gonna do that?
-So, what we have is this little sheet right here.
-Wow.
-Obviously, you can see, has plenty of stars.
Really all it is is a piece of wax paper... -Mm-hmm.
-With some transfer tape, which is basically like masking tape.
-Okay.
-It's over the top.
So, what we've done is we've cut these stars out individually, 'cause it's more manageable once you get up to the ceiling.
-Right.
-And then we can show you the process of how to actually transfer it from here onto your ceiling.
And again, in any pattern that you want to do.
You can either set it out to where it's very -- in grid, or it can be spiral, or just completely random.
-Okay.
-It really is gonna be user preference.
So, let's try to take these ones that we've pre-cut, and let's go ahead and start affixing them.
-Perfect.
-Excellent.
-Cool.
-Let's do it.
-All right, so, the process... You'll just peel the wax paper off.
-Oh, they're so pretty.
-Hand the star.
Fix that to the ceiling.
Then you're gonna scrape it smooth with a putty knife, and then you're gonna peel... -That's awesome.
-That is gorgeous.
-Wow.
-Wow.
-And then there's your star.
And so then we're gonna just go randomly around.
-Okay.
-Yes.
-You want to give it a shot?
-Sure.
-All right.
-The gold looks really good.
-Excellent.
-Now, of course, you're using a putty knife right now, but you can use credit card or anything that's somewhat flexible and has, you know, a solid edge.
-That's great.
Those look really good.
-All right.
So, you two, this is one of my favorite projects.
I actually made one of these for my 9-month-old, and he loves it.
It's a sensory board.
And the idea behind sensory boards is you want to stimulate your child's senses.
So, sensory boards are really fun for babies, but they also help with their growth.
-Okay.
-So, you can put almost anything on this board as long as it's baby-safe.
So, I just have a bunch of items.
We'll just show you.
-What is...?
-This is actually an infinity mirror, so it lights up, and it's also got a mirror in there.
-Oh, wow.
-Should be kind of fun.
-That is really fun.
-Yeah.
And then we also have another mirror.
Babies love mirrors when they get a little bit older.
You'll want to make sure that it's baby-safe and it doesn't shatter.
-Okay.
So, baby-safe is, like, shatter-proof.
-Yes, exactly.
-Okay.
-And then we just have some fun things to look at.
-What is that?
-It's just, like, a... -It's like a lava lamp.
-Yeah, like a lava lamp for a baby.
-Yeah.
And then we have some -- this one's great for motor skills, because -- so, at first, they're just gonna be like, you know, 'cause they're...
But then later, they can really start to manipulate it.
-It's got some math in there, too.
-Well, yes, when they get a little older, yes.
-They can count how many they go.
-Exactly.
-And they're different colors.
-We can just kind of play around, see what you like where.
Well, this needs to go in the, like, upper corner, 'cause that's gonna hang down.
-Yeah, so she can look up at it.
Yeah.
-So you want that in the upper corner.
-Yeah.
-Thank you.
Put this on with Velcro.
-Okay.
-Nice.
-And then just stick it to the board.
-Get it, you know... -Try to get with that... -Yeah.
-That's good.
-I think that's nice.
-I think that looks nice.
This is gonna be a big hit, so I think that needs to stay.
-Kind of down low?
-"ish," yeah.
-Yeah.
-This in the middle.
-Well, this is gonna spin, I think.
-Okay, so you want to put it right in the middle?
-Yeah.
-I personally had never heard of a sensory wall.
It's gonna teach the baby a lot.
-She'll be able to learn how to count and colors and -- -Lights and mirrors.
-While Aaron is finishing attaching the toys to the sensory wall, Alex and I are going to start another project.
Alex, I have a really simple, easy, fun art project for us to do.
-Okay.
-So, Lauren found this shower curtain.
So we're gonna turn this into a piece of art.
And we have a lot of the design to choose from, so you can kind of pick -- what will her birth sign be?
-She's gonna be a Pisces.
-She's gonna be Pisces.
So let's find the Pisces.
We definitely want that in there.
Oh, she's right there.
Okay.
-Right...okay.
-So, we definitely want Pisces.
We had the shower curtain, and then we just picked up a simple frame from the craft store.
-Okay.
-And we're gonna put this... -Just down like this?
-Yep.
Let's attach.
-All right.
-All right.
So, we're just gonna pull up one end.
And you just want to pull it really taut.
There you go.
And then all we do to attach is take a staple gun.
Let me get in here.
You want to put, you know, every three inches or so.
-Right.
-Careful of your fingers.
Pull it tight.
So, tell me -- are you nervous?
Are you excited?
A little of both?
-I'm nervous and excited.
-So, were you hoping for a boy or a girl?
Did it matter?
-We were expecting a boy.
Boys seem to run in my husband's family.
-So you were shocked when you got a girl, huh?
-We were surprised.
We were very surprised.
-All right.
-So, let's flip it.
And then we're gonna do the other side before we do the corners.
-We want to pull this side really tight.
-Yeah, really tight.
And then once we're done, we can cut off all this excess fabric.
Yep.
Want to do a little?
Want me to hold it tight and try it?
-Yeah.
-I think what's happening -- You got to push it flat.
-Push it flat.
On this.
-On the wood.
Yep.
Oh, you did it.
-Okay.
I am not good with a staple gun.
All right.
Right there.
Hand okay?
-Yep.
-All right.
-Perfect.
We're gonna look at it.
you make sure you like it.
-Okay.
-If you do, then we can cut off the excess.
-Yay!
-All right.
So, you ready?
-Yep.
It's beautiful.
Gorgeous.
-Yes?
Do you like where Pisces is?
-I love it.
Love it right in the middle.
-Good.
And what are you?
-I'm a Pisces, too.
-You are?
Oh, that's so sweet.
Well, that's perfect for both of you, then.
-Yes.
-Great.
-All right, Aaron.
So, what we're gonna do here is cut out your moon bookcase.
-So, right now, we're making the back of a moon bookcase?
-That's correct.
So, this is gonna be the outline of the bookcase.
-Okay.
-It's gonna go against the wall.
And the shelves are going to connect to it.
So you're just gonna see the profile of the moon behind the bookshelf.
-Okay.
-And so what we've done, a couple things to start, is that we found the center of the board.
We've tied a string to a screw in the center of the board.
We've come to a determination of about 1.5 inches from the edge.
That way we can get a good full circle around.
-Okay.
-Excellent.
It should be pretty easy to get right back on point with that.
Cool.
You got it all the way.
Nice.
What we're gonna do now is we're going to adjust these screws.
Now, these two here and this one.
See, and this is your center lines.
So we're going to move this screw, at some point, up through here.
And then you'd have two other screws that we're going to affix to this outside line here, and then evenly on the other side.
And then that will give us our arch.
So, you know, you can move it in one direction or the other.
-And are we gonna place something on those screws to make that line?
-Good question.
Yes.
What we're going to do is we're going to use a piece of flexible PVC.
-Okay.
-Now, this is gonna be personal preference, so we can get a general idea of where we want to go from here.
-Just gonna kind of bend it?
-Yeah, we're gonna kind of bend it.
-Okay.
So, are we gonna do -- we're cutting this side, then?
-Yes, correct.
-Okay.
-We're gonna cut this side up here.
And so we will just mark it with a pencil.
So, now let's come up here on this center line and figure out exactly where we are.
It's right here.
It should be good with that.
All right.
Now let's go ahead and affix a screw.
And you want to make sure you go in a little bit.
This PVC could... -Pop it out.
-...pop it out.
-Okay.
We're gonna do the same here?
-Same there on your side.
Same on mine.
Should be good.
And now what we will do is we will have outside shape here.
And there's your inside shape.
-Awesome.
-And now what we'll do is just do a trace of the moon.
There you go.
And you have a nice shape of the moon.
-Excellent.
-Let's remove these screws then.
-Okay.
-And then we can go ahead and start to cut.
-A little sandpapering.
Okay.
What's next?
-All right, so we're gonna take your moon, we're gonna sand it, paint it, and we're gonna attach three floating bookshelves.
-Okay.
-And then it'll be on the wall as a profile.
It should look really nice.
-Awesome.
So I wanted to come up with a really personal project for your nursery that will have meaning to you both and to Charlotte.
So I thought about creating a time capsule.
-Okay.
-And this is a way to sort of freeze time, and then when she's older, she can open it up and kind of discover what life was like before she was born.
So when I first came up with this idea of a time capsule, you know, a lot of times people bury things, but I didn't want to do that.
I wanted to include it in the nursery.
So what we have is a wall safe.
-Wow.
-Yeah.
-Cool.
-And we're gonna cut a little area out of the drywall and we're gonna install the wall safe in there.
-Okay.
-And then we're gonna put a piece of art over top of it.
-So then no one will know it's there, including Charlotte!
-Yes.
-Keep it a secret for quite a few years.
-Wow.
Until we're ready to open it up.
-That's right.
-Pretty cool.
-And we tried to get some personal family heirlooms for Charlotte.
-Oh, that's a great idea.
-Each set of grandparents picked out something, you know, private and special to them to put in there for her, and then Aaron and I both chose to write her each individual letters.
-So one of the things my father put in there was a silver dollar, so that'll be handed down five generations.
-Oh, my gosh.
-I also want to put in a ring that my dad gave to me, that he got from his great aunt who helped raise him.
-Aww.
-So there's gonna be some really special things in there.
-There will.
-Once she starts to learn about it, it's gonna be exciting for her.
Like, just the anticipation of opening up a time capsule.
-It's gonna be really cool.
-Well, and I thought one of the cool thing is this is something that they could leave behind.
-Right.
-We want to build a time capsule, so the first thing we need to do is find our stud so that we can attach our wall safe.
We marked our area to cut.
We're gonna cut the rest of this out, slide it in, mark our holes on the inside of the safe.
-Okay.
-We have a two-inch bolt that's gonna be plenty heavy enough gauge to attach to the studs, and we'll put six on either side.
And then we'll cover it up, and then we should be done.
-Great.
Wonderful.
And then once it's in, then we'll hang a piece of art over it and no one will know.
-No one will even know.
-Okay, great.
All right, keep going.
I want to see it come out.
-All right.
Well, once we find the studs, we're able to cut the sheetrock out, attach it to the studs, and then secure it to the wall firmly.
-A project almost every new parent undertakes is putting together a crib.
Today's cribs are designed to be incredibly safe, but you do need to be sure to follow directions closely.
-Step one... does not have words.
-It has the... -Pictures.
I'm hoping there's an Allen wrench in here, and there's not.
-There's some.
-There it is.
-That's the outside.
That's the different crib heights, is what this is.
-This is gonna be Charlotte's bed.
-I know.
-I think it just got real.
So I went straight from 1 to 10?
-Step two.
-So this is usually pretty typical, that we have to take it apart and put it back together.
-Yep, and the wheels go on last.
-Oh, so that -- we're good.
Can we put the wheels on now?
-No.
-Just for fun?
-The wheels on the bus do not go on right now.
-I'm guessing that those go where I want them to.
-We are moving everything into the room, and we're down to the finishing touches.
