BENEDICT WAS THE FIRST PONTIFF IN OVER 600 YEARS TO RESIGN HIS POSITION RATHER THAN HOLD OFFICE FOR LIFE.
HE WAS LAID TO REST IN THE CRYPT UNDER ST. PETER'S BASILICA.
IN SAN DIEGO, WORSHIPERS BRAVED THE RAIN AND GATHERED AT ST. JOSEPH'S CATHEDRAL DOWNTOWN FOR AN AFTERNOON OF SERVICE.
